Allspice refers to a berry that is dried and ground up, like other spices. It is NOT a combination of spices or a spice blend.

Loved this recipe! We made it the night before and woke up to the house smelling like apples and cinnamon. We left out the orange and it was the perfect level of sweetness. If anyone is worried about mashing up the apples, don’t be! The apples fall apart by the end of the cook time, and gently mushing them around with a spoon is really all that is needed.

We’ll definitely be making this a regular fall recipe :))

You can always add extra sugar if it is too tart.

The pith from the orange can be bitter. I took big strips of zest, then cut off all the white part. I thought the recipe was too heavy in cloves for my.taste, so I used just a.teaspoon.

Sugar helps apples stay intact- cooking first without sugar will help breakdown apples.

I also put the sugar in too early and it came out fine. I also did this in a pot on the stove instead of crock pot. I boiled it for 90 mins, removed apples and mashed them, added the mashed apples back in and simmered it for 45 mins and it came out great. Also used the mashed apples the were strained out to make apple butter. Only needed to add a bit of sugar to make th apple butter in the blender.

Made this today and it was great! There’s nothing better than hot apple cider! In the future, I will probably omit the orange and add a bit more brown sugar. Maybe I will also use honey crisp apples instead of Gala.
